A Day at Kennesaw With My Two Favorites

The weather was supposed to be amazing on Sunday, so we made plans to spend the day at Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park. Raileigh nor I had ever been, and Darren hadn't been since he was really little. So, off we went. It was PACKED thanks to the weekend and the gorgeous weather. We parked about a 1/2 mile from the visitors center in this side of the road parking area.

On weekdays, you can drive your car to the top of the mountain. It's about 1.2 miles. Yesterday, they had a shuttle bus running and it was free, so we took it the top. The view was spectacular!

After enjoying the view, we walked down the mountain a bit to a trail that crossed the road. We started looking for a two box letterbox series that had been planted a few months ago, but hadn't had any finders so far. First, it was down Kennesaw Mtn., then we started back up Little Kennesaw Mtn... which is not so little! We stopped to rest often and get water.


At some point before we reached the top of Little Kennesaw, there were 4 cannons left from an old fort. They looked pretty cool just sitting amongst all these trees.



Also before we reached the top, we saw this little guy off to the side of the trail.


Then, we were finally at the top of the mountain and very near our first box. The view from the box was amazing! We snacked and rested for a bit, and let Raileigh out of the backpack to get some fresh air. We tried taking pictures with her, but she wasn't super cooperative.



We then headed off to the 2nd box, which took you a bit down the opposite side of the mountain from where we'd came up. Another amazing view! The skyline of Atlanta could be seen so clearly! The clouds looked really neat as well. While here, I knocked Raileigh's pacifier off this huge boulder we were sitting on and Darren had to climb all the way down and get it-- ooops!


After resting here a bit, we started the journey back to our car, which was back the way we'd came. At some point on the way up, Darren had asked me how long the hike was and I was like "I don't know"... It wound up being long! Regardless, it was amazing! Before we reached the paved road/ trail going up Kennesaw Mtn., Raileigh was out.



We stopped at the Visitor's Center and I bought a Kennesaw Mountain Hiker patch, which I felt like we all deserved yesterday! It was definitely the longest and hardest hike we've been on since Raileigh arrived. But, I can't wait to go again!
